GEOB 270 lab 5 – Environmental Impact Assessment(ELA)

GIS

For this lab assignment, I was assigned to produce 2 maps of the Municipality of Squamish for analyzing the potential impact of environmental impact at the elevation of 600m after building a new ski place.

First map:

Second map:

Reflection:

For the map 3D hillshade of Environmental Impact in Squamish, it provides a snowline that elevation is equal to 600m. Around the snowline, it has index contours, rivers, road, area of growth, fish habitat riparian management zone, ungulate habitat area, hillshade and project boundary.

On the map, the snowline is very close to fish, rivers, fish and wildlife, which means it has a potential effect on the environment. More importantly, it only has 38.5% of areas that are protected. 61.5% of areas that are not protected, which means that the ski development has a more negative impact on the environment. Also, when the ski open to the public, all the projected areas have the possibility to be damaged by the public or people, because the projected areas are not guaranteed protected.

For the snowline elevation, the problem of climate change becomes worse every year. Maybe in the future, an elevation that is lower than 600m is not having enough snow for skiing.

For the potential errors of my analysis:First: it covers a large area where I didn't analysis in a small area. Having a large area means there is less detail about the area.Second: the percentage of the projected area may be different not current since I dissolve all the area into one layer.

For further analysis:First, I want to analyze more data about animal habitat areas not only analysis fish habitat areas.  Second, I want to analyze more data about the snowline elevation, since climate change becomes worse, I would like to know which elevation in the future is stable that have enough snow.Third, I would like to add more datasets about the fish habitat. I want to know which kind of fish species are living in that area.
