Final project — Potential Risk and Exposure to Natural Hazards in Richmond, BC

GIS

For our final project, my group members are curious about the potential risk in Richmond, BC since we all know that Vancouver will have an earthquake happen in the future. Therefore, we created four maps in order to demonstrate the risk of Richmond.

Project proposal and goal.

Our project aims to demonstrate the exposure and vulnerability of Richmond to natural hazards in specific flooding and earthquake. We want to predict which zoning of Richmond will affect by flooding and what will happen when an earthquake happens in Richmond. Therefore, we created four maps which are population density of Richmond, potential flood risk in Richmond within 5-meter scenario, Richmond land composition and public safety services in Richmond.

Project management:

We organize our quite efficiency. For example, me and Vanessa (one of my group member) are mainly focused on creating maps and flowcharts of the report. This gives my other two members (Jacky and Chloe) more time mainly focus on writing the final report and they also created 2 maps for the project.

Interesting things:

Throughout the process of creating maps, we find out that there is only one hospital for the Richmond area, which is not sufficient enough to provide much medical help for all citizens.

For GIS techniques, we mainly used 'clips' and 'joins' functions in creating maps, which helps us to put all the data together to show the result of our maps. We also used classification for two maps to demonstrate our result. However, before we start to create maps, we have trouble to find the right data. For example, for Richmond's land composition we cannot find the except data we want. Another example, we find the right data from the website, but we don't have the permission to download, which makes us feel frustration. Next time, I would like to find all the data before I start writing the proposal.
