- Quantitative Data Classification
For map 1, I used four classifications to demonstrate rental in Metro Vancouver. As you can see for manual breaks, I separate 5 classes and each class maximum different is 500 (except the last values). Using manual breaks is fair when comparing different cities or locations, unlike natural breaks.
Natural breaks separate values automatic by a computer where all the values different are random and the values start from zero. Also, the maps will be different, wherein manual breaks some area colour is different than natural breaks.
For equal intervals, map is different compare to manual and natural breaks that only one area is the darkest colour. However, in manual and natural breaks above the west and north Vancouver is the darkest colour.
For standard deviation, the map indicates different values where it demonstrates the mean values, this method good for showing which areas are above or below the rental areas.
2. Cost of Rental In Vancouver and Montreal
All the data comes from Statistics Canada, where I used for rental values in Montreal and Vancouver. Both maps used manual breaks classification for comparison, which separates values by 500. However, some areas have not data, because it may not be a residential area or it is used for private dwelling. There is some error in map 2 where data maybe not accurate and data is not updated to nowadays.
3. Affordability of Shelter
Map 3 is measuring people who spend more than 30 percent of their income on rent. Base on the map where people in Vancouver need to spend 30 percent or more of their income on rental than people in Montreal. I think indicate shelter affordability is better because rental cost is different for different apartments or houses, which may lead to areas overall rental cost is different and map colour may change as well. However, affordability is not a good indicator of a city's livability. I think both affordability and rental costs combine together will be a good indicator of the city's livability, because this way readers will have more information about that city of their housing rental prices.
